A kind of light spread out from her. And everything changed color. And the world opened out. And a day was good to awaken to. And there were no limits to anything. And the people of the world were good and handsome. And I was not afraid anymore.”
― John Steinbeck, East of Eden
Recently I announced the book “The Interior Sight”, my first book that I co-created in collaboration with my endearing friend and book author Victor Peláez. This is one of the stories in the book that we titled “Traditions”.
Here is the story:
Our image is touching, not only because of its disturbing beauty. The photographer called it “Awakenings” revealing the moment in which the image was captured: the awakening of a radiant day at the seashore. And, with the same artistic intention of a painter of lights and shadows, the photographer captured that flock of seabirds that, undoubtedly, suggest the freedom of movement, the happiness of living a new day.
The image is so suggestive that it feels like being next to the photographer, enjoying an idyllic awakening on the seashore, almost like a dream!
We are facing two universes: sleep and wakefulness; both vital for existence. The passage from one to the other is a carrier of different semiotics depending on the direction in which it occurs; the awakening is interpreted as an arrival, as an awareness, while to dream it is necessary to sleep, to abandon consciousness, to leave this world in order to inhabit, albeit for a short time, another world, a one created by us.
