It was called love. Something blue blue.”
― Petra Hermans
For me, Blue is a passionate story of surviving and soul-searching that was made a film in 1993 by director Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941 – 1996) as the first film of his trilogy “Three Colours”. In Three Colours Blue, Julie —masterfully represented by Juliette Binoche — struggles to find a way to live after the death of her husband and daughter in a car accident. The last sequence of Blue suggests Julie has found, or probably she is in her way to find, a new way of life.
But, also when I think about the color blue, Blue Movie (also known as Fuck) comes to my mind. This is a short film that was produced and directed by Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) and the first erotic film including explicit sex scenes that was widely distributed in theaters in the United States. Arguably, the film was a major influence in the making of Last Tango in Paris, a controversial erotic film starring by Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.
We live in the “Blue Planet”, blue is the sky and the sea, the color blue is also considered a symbol of depression and sadness in the occidental culture, and curiously, to say the least, in most European cultures aristocrats are “blood-blooded”.
In art and design, blue is used to evoke all sort of positives and negatives feelings, and subliminally convey different messages — just think about the Starry Nights of Vicent Van Gogh. All that said, this image is my humble contribution to the “Blue” repertoire of art and to all those contributors to what I call the “Blue Art”: Kieslowski, Binoche, Warhol, Schneider, Brando, Bertolucci, Van Goh, and many more that for sure escape from my mind now.
