“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion. ” ― Martha Graham
As you probably remember, I’ve been working on “The Art of Ballet” series, I recently published a couple of posts on my blog ― you can read post #1 here, and post #2 here. Researching for this series I realized about the controversy out there regarding whether ballet is an art or a sport.
For me ― and I’m not trying to negate the fact that the physical skills and preparation required to properly execute ballet requires an extreme level of athleticism ― ballet is more about expression, about passion, about the application of creative skills and imagination, that among other aspects requires an extreme level of physical fitness. I definitely don’t see ballerinas, either professional or amateur, competing in the Olympics, well at least in the near future.
On the other hand, I understand the point of view of some people tending to think of ballet as a sport. When you see the perfect muscular tone of the ballerina in this image, it’s difficult not to mentally associate her with an athlete. But, imagine if ballet were just about the physical strength, the pirouettes, the splits, etc. so where would the story be? That’s the essence of ballet.
Finally, I’d like to say that same as the arts, sports can produce a feeling of excitement, it can increase people’s levels of euphoria, however, it can’t take you beyond the moment, art can. In my opinion is the combination of all the elements: physical movements, music, stage, interpretation, etc. what makes ballet an art that can, same as sports, be lived intensely, but it also rises above the moment allowing the senses to explore the fascinating stories told by the dancers in the scene.
